Shymbulak is a popular year-round mountain resort in Almaty, located in a picturesque gorge of Zailiyskiy Alatau at an altitude of 2260 meters above sea level, 20 minutes from the city center. The resort has been functioning since 1954. At that time the first all-union competitions in alpine skiing began to be held at Shymbulak. Today Shymbulak is the main attraction of Kazakhstan and a favorite recreation place of Almaty citizens and guests of the city, which is visited by more than one and a half million tourists annually.
